Undergraduate Students of Department of Chemical Engineering, Received the Senior Project Award in Academic Year 2005
Ms. Chayuda Juanuwattanakul and Ms. Chutinan Promdej
Ms. Chayuda Juanuwattanakul and Ms. Chutinan Promdej, undergraduate students of Department of Chemical Engineering, have received the senior project award in Academic year 2005 from Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. This project is “Application of nanoclay in health care product” which Nattaporn Tonanon acts as project advisor. We study about the possibility to formulate effective hair conditioner with the addition of nanoclay. Organoclay, one type of nanoclay that used in this experiment, was used to absorb the bergamot oil, one component in hair conditioner. To formulate the most effective hair conditioner, the proper type of organoclay, the appropriate ratio of bergamot oil and organoclay and the effect of the ingredient of conditioner to the hair conditioner to the hair were studied. Moreover, this study compares the effect of nanoparticle (organoclay) and non-nanoparticle (soft-prepared chalk) and compares the new hair conditioner and product in the market. From the study, it is found that organoclay can be an important ingredient in conditioner. Because of the characteristic, very small size, of organoclay, it can pass the gap between the two keratins of layer and strengthens disulfide bond. Consequently, the sheet of keratin will be filed away. That makes the hair healthier.

Chemical Engineering staff Receive the 2006 Innovation Ambassador
Professor Piyasan Praserthdam won the 2006 outstanding scientists award from the Founation for the Promotion of Science and Technology, under the Patronage of His Majesty the King Professor Piyasan' s research is aimed at developing new catalysts, the key ingredient used in petrochemical industry focused in two directions. The first was the study of catalyst deactivation and how to prevent deactivation. The second was the development of new catalysts that were more active and efficient than existing commerial ones. His research has led to new ways of prolonging the activity of catalysts, which could be used as a foundation for catalyst design in the future. Professor Piyasan had also discovered a new methodology for materials and energy utilisation, which he said would help the nation davelop energy-related strategies for sustainable living. "From my research, I would suggest two key points of energy utilisation that should be avoided: the use of pure materials produced from physical separation processes as fuel, and the use of electricity for heat," he said. He hoped that this knowledge would be used in the further development of energy usage and energy utilisation plans for the country. Beside Professor Piyasan, the Foundation also honoured another outstanding senior researcher and 5 new young outstanding researchers this year. This include Assist.Prof.JoongJai Panpranot, a faculty member of the Chemical Engineering Department of Chulalongkorn University. The Foundation said the research work conducted by both the outstanding scientists and the new generation of scientists would provide key knowledge for the country' s technological development.

Miss Sirachaya Kunjara Na Ayudhya
Miss Sirachaya Kunjara Na Ayudhya is a Ph.D. student entering the program since academic year 2004 with a scholarship from the Thailand Research Fund (TRF) under the Royal Golden Jubilee scholarship program. She had an opportunity to go, as a visiting scholar, to College of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A. under supervision of the host professor, Prof. Gabor A. Somorjai to do a research and experience living abroad. She spent 8 months period there under financial support by the Royal Golden Jubilee scholarship program. Apart from her chance to do a research with American people and with good facilities provided there, she had a chance to attend many seminars which were normally held at the department nearly every evening and many special seminars from invited speakers around the world. Also, she had a chance to attend an international surface science symposium which was organized by her host professor, Prof. Gabor A. Somorjai. Not only the benefits in terms of learning new knowledge in scientific field, going abroad this time gave her an opportunity to know foreign people and learn how to live in different cultures and environments which was the thing she regarded as the most valuable prospect to learn for one’s life.
